Summer Outings Programme 2018 ARCHIVE
The summer season consists of two Saturday coach trips, plus a number of short evening outings, mostly on Tuesdays. Tuesday meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but please assemble a little earlier at the indicated places. There's no limit on numbers but please car-share wherever possible as it often makes parking a little easier. Most evenings involve a walk (usually not more than 2 miles) with interesting photo- opportunities and will finish no later than 9 o'clock with a trip to a local hostelry.
- Tuesday 15th May 7 pm: Stanage Edge Leader Frank Milner
This is a short walk with a steady ascent to Carhead Rocks and Cattis-side Moor. Excellent views up to Stanage Edge, hopefully bathed in evening sunshine, and down Hope Valley.
Meet at The Climbers' Car Park, on the roadside below Stanage Edge at 7 pm. Grid Reference SK 244 829. Afterwards meet for drinks at The Norfolk Arms, Ringinglow.
- Tuesday 22nd May Sky Edge – a high point of Sheffield! Leader John Scholey
This walk will take us from the meeting place up onto Sky Edge where there are magnificent views across the city centre, Park Hill flats, St John’s Church and plenty of graffiti too.
Meet at the Supertram stop behind Sheffield Station. Drinks afterward at the Old Queen's Head off Pond Street, by the transport interchange.
- Saturday 2nd June Day Trip to Burghley House near Stamford
Burghley House is a big and impressive 16th century Elizabethan property near Stamford, built and lived in by the Cecil family. The House features a circuit of 18 grand and richly furnished state apartments and an extensive collection of art. Outside there are beautiful gardens and parklands, originally laid out by Capability Brown. It also offers a Sculpture Garden and a Garden of Surprises , both providing very good photographic opportunities. Photography is allowed in the House but no tripods or flash.
Price: £27 per person. This includes £13 group entry to the house and gardens (a reduction on the individual entry fee).
Pick up on Abbeydale Road bus stop by the junction with Dobcroft Road. Pick up at 8.00 return approx 18.00
- Tuesday 19th June 7 pm: Kelham Island Leader: Gareth Morgan.
A revisit to Kelham Island - listed as one of the top 10 “coolest places” in Britain according to Travelsupemarket.com. Following a completely different route to our previous visit this will be an opportunity to see how much has changed in the past few years. The walk will include some industrial heritage; urban renewal /modern architecture; some of the dereliction that has yet to be tackled; some interesting street art and maybe even a bit of nature with a short saunter along a section of the River Don where heron and kingfishers have been spotted recently. Hopefully we will also get to see one of the most “famous” trees in Sheffield (assuming Amey haven’t chopped it down by then!)
Meet at 7pm under the Bessemer Converter outside the Kelham Island Museum; drinks afterwards at The Fat Cat.
- Monday, 25th June, 7pm: Sheffield Cathedral “lock-in” Leaders Mike Smith/Alan Phillips
This is a very unusual and interesting outing. We have been offered unfettered access to the Cathedral interior for a couple of hours, tripods and flash allowed. No other visitors will be allowed in whilst we are there. Weather permitting, we will also be allowed access to the Cathedral roof, from where we can take views across the city.
Meet at the Cathedral main entrance at 7pm. Drinks afterwards at a city centre pub (to be decided). Please note: this is a Monday evening outing, the only day of the week when there is no evening service at the Cathedral.
- Saturday 30th June: Day trip to Scarborough.
Our first seaside destination since 2014, Scarborough is a big and busy, traditional resort with plenty of people around, two big beaches in the North and South bays, interesting backstreets and old church and castle.
It also has a miniature railway in the North Bay, featuring the oldest diesel hydraulic locomotive in the world. Peasholm Park, also in the North Bay, is Japanese themed and has a ‘beautiful system of streams and waterfalls, mini bridges and mystical gardens’. Grade 2 listed by Historic England. Marine Drive, an extensive Victorian promenade built around the base of the headland, links the North Bay and South Bays. Overlooking both bays is Scarborough Castle. Plenty of photographic opportunities.

- Tuesday 3rd July 7 pm: Derwent Dam Leader: Frank Milner
Walk to Derwent Dam and up to West Tower and the drive up to Birchinglee (Tintown) for short walk and guided tour with talk on The Story of the Dam Builders by Dave Ashton (Peak Park Ranger).
Meet at Fairholmes Visitor Centre car park at 7 pm. Afterwards meet for drinks at The Yorkshire Bridge, Bamford.
