Summer Outings Programme 2019 ARCHIVE
The summer season consists of two Saturday coach trips, plus a number of short evening outings, mostly on Tuesdays. Tuesday meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but please assemble a little earlier at the indicated places. There's no limit on numbers but please car-share wherever possible as it often makes parking a little easier. Most evenings involve a walk (usually not more than 2 miles) with interesting photo- opportunities and will finish no later than 9 o'clock with a trip to a local hostelry.
- Tuesday 14th May 7 pm: A springtime walk in Moss Valley Woodlands (S8 8BG) Leader: John Ferretti
This is a leisurely walk in an ancient woodland. In Spring, the woods are covered with bluebells, wood anemone and wild garlic. To meet, turn off Bochum Parkway at the roundabout with Norton Ave down Lightwood Lane leading to Hazlehurst Lane and park in the lay-by or on the grass verge on the left after about a mile. We will walk through Bridle Road Wood, Dowey Lumb, Long Wood and possibly Coal Pit Wood. Mainly flat – walking shoes or good trainers.
Subject to cancellation if the bluebells are over.
- Tuesday 11th June Stanage Edge 7:00pm Leader: Frank Milner
Meet at The Car Park just past Upper Burbage Bridge on the Ringinglow to Hathersage road.
Walking boots or strong shoes required for this walk of approximately 2 miles.
Photo opportunities include millstones , rock formations, extensive views along Stanage Edge and over the Peak District plus possible sighting of Ring Ouzels and a good sunset.
Drinks afterwards at The Norfolk Arms, Ringinglow.
- Saturday 15th June Day Trip to Ellesmere Port and Port Sunlight
Pick up on Abbeydale Road bus stop by the junction with Dobcroft Road for a departure at 8:00am to Ellesmere Port.
We will continue on in the afternoon to Port Sunlight.
A more detailed itinery will be sent nearer the date.
- Tuesday 18th June 7 pm: South Yorkshire Mounted Police Stables, Ring Farm, Cudworth Leader: June Gorman.
Meet at the stables car park at 6:30pm.
Meet the police officers and their horses and learn how long it takes to train officer and horse.
You will have ample opportunity to take photos of the horses.
Retire to local public house to be confirmed at a later date.
Directions to Ring Farm as follows:-
Take the A61 to Barnsley. Just past Worsbrough Mill take next right on West St B6100 at Stairfoot Roundabout take 2nd exit onto Grange Lane A633.
At Cundy Cross traffic lights turn right onto A628 Pontefract Road continue on Pontefract Road taking the 4th exit at the next roundabout and straight over the next one.
This road becomes Barnsley Road and in approx. 200 yds you take the first right onto Manor Road.
In another 200 yds take another right onto Lunn Road continue 200 yds turn right onto Carr Lane carry on down this lane for 300 yds to Ring Farm and the stables are on the right.
- Tuesday 9th July, 7pm: Wentworth village and Estate. Leaders June Gorman and Gareth Morgan
Meet up in the village car park at 7:00pm then stroll up to the House for a bit although the house is not very photogenic at the moment due to scaffolding.
Then head back towards the church via the footpath opposite the garden centre. We have been given access to the ‘New’ and ‘Old’ churches which are very different for photographic opportunities.
Finally back through the village passing Paradise Square, Mechanics Institute and other historical buildings ending at the Rockingham Arms for refreshments.
- Saturday 13th July: Day trip to Black Country Living Museum.
Pick up on Abbeydale Road bus stop by the junction with Dobcroft Road. for departure at 08:00 to the Black Country Museum.

- Tuesday 16th July 7 pm: Kelham Island after hours Leader: Gareth Morgan
SPS members will have exclusive access to Kelham Island Museum after it has closed to the general public. The chance to explore 3 floors of stories and artifacts from Sheffield’s Industrial Heritage: including the most powerful working steam engine in Europe; a recreation of a Victorian Street with little mesters workshops , a transport gallery with Sheffield made vehicles and many other photographic opportunities. Some parts of the Museum are quite dark so members may want to bring tripods and/or flash as they prefer!
A small "donation" (£5 minimum) will cover access and security staffing costs – to be collected on the evening by Gareth Morgan. Doors will be open from 18:30 – drinks afterwards at The Fat Cat.
- Tuesday 23rd July 7 pm: Parkwood Springs (Sheffield history) Leader: John Scholey
Meet outside the derelict Farfield Pub on Neepsend Lane - S3 8AW at 7:00pm. There is plenty of on-street parking around.
The walk will be over the railway line, past the old Neepsend Station and then up on to Parkwood Springs. There are great views over Sheffield from the top. We will walk along through the allotments and down to Wardsend Cemetry and then back along Club Mill Road at the side of the River Don. There will be a couple of steep climbs and boots or strong walking shoes are recommended.
Head for the Gardners Rest on Neepsend Lane for a drink afterwards.
